OpenFile story - At Villa Karuna, a Tamil approach...
Here are some portraits from a story I shot for OpenFile Toronto last month. Villa Karuna is a senior’s care facility established for the Tamil community in Scarborough.
Kanmany Selvanayagam, 91, has been a resident at Villa Karuna for just over a year. “This is such a needed service for everyone,” she says. “I don’t have anyone. I am alone.”

Big Update
So it has been about six months since I have updated this blog. I have a valid excuse for the lack of content for the first three months (December-March). During this time I travelled to Africa. I spent about 1 month in South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania respectively.
The trip was an incredible experience, which has left me with approximately 5000 digital photographs and 60 rolls of film to edit....

The Streets of London - in 13 hours
I landed in London around 8 am no more than 2 hour of sleep withe the intent to stay up all day photographing Londoners on the streets, while waiting for my connecting flight to Johannesburg 13 hours later.
This is what I saw during my layover in London.

The First Roll
The last few weeks I have been eagerly waiting to receive my recently purchased Minolta Autcord TLR (thanks eBay!) This weekend, I finally got it and shot my first roll of film.
Saturday: The boys and I spent the afternoon/evening in picturesque Port Dalhousie (we played a show in town that night).
Sunday: I was back home to celebrate Oma’s birthday. She loves having her...

Burning Love - Toronto, ON - January 9, 2010 from Ryan Walker Photography on Vimeo.
Sadly I can not make it to see Burning Love play Toronto tonight. They are currently on tour with Coliseum. Unfortunately they were robbed of all of their gear in Philadelphia. Get out to Parts and Labour (1566 Queen Street W) and support them now.

G20 Takeover
Tonight I spent a couple of hours walking the streets. I immediately noticed the increased police presence. It seemed as though every corner I turned a new swarm of armed personnel stood, waiting, watching my every move. One overzealous security guard warned me that I would be arrested if I continued to shoot, as police in the vicinity had arrested several photographers earlier in the day. I...

A Vigil for Darcy Allan Sheppard
Tuesday’s impromptu vigil came after word spread through the bicycle-courier community that the Crown had dropped all charges against Michael Bryant, Ontario’s former attorney-general. With police watching, about 100 cyclists gathered in silence at the scene of Mr. Sheppard’s death. (source)

Gun Fever in America
So this weekend a crew of us visited gun range in Niagara Falls New York for Jesse’s bachelor party. On the way to the range we stopped at KFC to try their new Double Down ‘sandwich’. At over 540 calories, this monster of cheese, sauce and bacon sandwiched between two breaded chicken filets left most of us comatose.
So what better thing to do at state we were in following...

Upon my return I was informed that I had been awarded the Scotia Bank Scholarship for the Magnum Workshop Toronto at Contact 2010. I have...

Mockingbird Wish Me Luck
One of the best bands currently in Ontario. Their EP entitled ‘Goodbye Debris’ has received some well deserved accolades since being released. Punknews.org listed ‘Goodbye Debris’ on their Top 20 EPs/Singles of 2009.. Here’s what they had to say:
Kitchener, Ontario’s Mockingbird Wish Me Luck describes their songs here as “the heart of basement songs...

My latest photo project
Over the last month I have been dedicating most of my time to a photo documentary on my grandmother. As the time has passed it has become clear that this body of work is also a reflection of myself and my personal memories of my grandparents. I have shot over 1000 photos and have narrowed those shots down to approximately 120 images. Tonight that selection has been narrowed down to 50 shots. I...
Céline Clanet - Máze
There’s a sense of beautiful unease about Celine Clanet’s photo essay, Máze, the icy environment creating a gentle juxtaposition against the subtle warmth of the colors. Of the series, she says: ‘I lived for several months in Máze, up to the north of the Arctic Circle, in Norway. There, I met these quiet people, melancholic, captivating, very proud of their Sami village and territory, proud of...

Jaret Belliveau
I have recently started taking a Documentary Photography class at Ryerson. A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of meeting Jaret Belliveau, a Canadian photographer who grew up on the east coast. Perhaps his most acclaimed body of work to date, Familial Endurance, documents the battle, and ultimate loss, of Belliveau’s mother. More from Belliveau’s statement.
This body of work began as an...
